I hope you caught our program with Michael Novak on December 14th. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with him. He spoke on many subjects and was always forthright and instructional. I was touched by his willingness to share his own paths in lots of ways. I was cautioned that he didn't enjoy talking about himself but he seemed very open and I got a real sense of who he is. If you would like to know a bit more about him personally go here- This is a memoir (he is writing his biography as we speak) of his life up to the point his brother was murdered and and how that impacted his life. I was touched by his transition intellectually and politically and how his faith drove that. To listen to the show click here.
Also after the program was over I spoke a bit more with him. I had heard that he is a registered Democrat that over time has voted conservative. So I asked him about that. He told me that a few years ago he and his wife relocated and had to re-register. They asked him for a party affiliation and he said, "Can I register as an Independent?" They told him he could. Then he asked if he could vote in primaries as one. They said no. So he registered as a Republican. So there you have it.
I asked him about his switch and he said he didn't leave the party the party left him! Being one who also "converted" to political conservatism, I undertsood completely. I said that I was in my heart, a Truman Democrat, and Michael who at first said he was a JFK Democrat, then paused and said, "no, I agree, Truman was a good common sense man who was thrifty and principled."
Hope you enjoyed the show!
