Where do our rights come from? What is a right? A Right is that which is authorized by God by means of His permission or creation. In the big picture we have absolute freedom of thought. There is no limitation on what we can think or imagine, except that which we impose on ourselves. This freedom of thought gives us, by extension other freedoms. Because we freely think we have the freedom to express those thoughts as speech or with the press, or through assembly or worship- these RIGHTS are given to us by the God who gave us freedom of thought as part His creation. Therefore they are inalienable, they cannot be be alienated or made foreign to us, for they are natural to us as given by God.God has also given us authority. We have authority over the land and sea and all that is on it or in it. This authority brings with it, an obligation to preserve the land and the sea. This Authority as given by God is from the word Exousia- The word is comprised of the preposition EX—out of or out from, and Ousia, - Being (A present active participle of the verb to be.) The word translated authority means OUT-FROM BEING, or BEING OUT-FROM. So the great I AM (from the verb to be) gives us authority "out from" Himself. This fact makes GOD the sole source of Authority- Jesus said ALL authority has been given to me…… Matt 28. This authority is where our "rights" come from, and in other words, because we have authority we have, by extension, certain (particular) rights. For example:God has given you and I authority (the keys to the Kingdom) to storm the gates of hell. Does that mean we have the RIGHT? I believe it does.He gives us authority to be ambassadors for the Kingdom. Does that mean we have that "right"? Yes I believe it does since by His authority we "represent" the King.He placed man (kind) in the garden “to work” and he gave man (kind) “permission” to partake of the fruit of his labor. This is the right to possessions and their stewardship. .The Modernist Liberal view has been that rights are endowed by mankind and then administered by the state. If this is true than the state can take them away, a scary thought to me.The Biblical view is that there are certain (particular) rights that are inalienable, and cannot be taken from us, except by God, which are, right to Life, to be Free to choose, and the right to pursue happiness, (or felicity, benefit, -all of these would have been understood as happiness in the 18th century.) Our Bill of Rights contains these principles at its core as our Founders, Madison specifically, were steeped in the Bible- Mlost were graduates of Harvard or Yale, both Divinity schools at the time.A Classic Liberal believes the latter, that we are essentially (in essence) FREE, – it is for freedom Christ made us free- and those of us who understand this, form governments to protect our freedom and our inalienable rights. If one does not think that there are certain inalienable rights, and subscribes to the former view above, then the question becomes who decides? If it is the State, the state could as easily give us the right to marry our siblings, as it could limit our speech only to certain words. And where does the wisdom come from that tells those running the State what our rights are or should be?Unless we recognize that there are certain principles (particular ones) that should always BE, and have always BEEN, we are doomed to degrade into evil. Our inalienable rights are examples of things that have always been. It is inevitable that we degrade into evil if we don't understand this idea..What say you?
